Litigation and Dispute Resolution partners Bruce Sabados and Joel Weiner represented defendants Happy Walters, Dan Fegan and Relativity Sports, the agents for Milwaukee Bucks basketball player Larry Sanders, in a ruling dismissing various commercial tort claims brought by Sanders’ former agent against Katten’s clients. In a decision that was highlighted in a New York Law Journal article, Manhattan Supreme Court Justice Eileen Bransten found that the plaintiff failed to state any cognizable New York claims, and dismissed the action with prejudice and without leave to replead. Bruce and Joel said they were “pleased that the court found no legal basis” to any of the plaintiff’s claims and “rejected [his] efforts to transform a typical free market outcome into a legal claim.”

Katten’s defense team also included Los Angeles partner Gloria Franke Shaw and New York associates Gregory Johnson and Margaret McQuade. (“Court Rejects Sports Agents’ Poaching Suit,” October 22, 2014)
