In recent months the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has taken steps to implement a framework within which small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) can be safely integrated into the national airspace. This article reviews the FAA’s interim policy to expedite airspace authorizations for commercial sUAS operators that have obtained Section 333 exemptions. The article also addresses the FAA's notice of proposed rulemaking on the operation and certification of sUAS, including operational limitations, operator certificate and responsibilities, and aircraft requirements.
